Sleep Apnea Treatment

Americans are becoming more and more aware of sleep apnea treatment . What was at first thought to be a rare and elderly linked condition has been clearly proven to be affecting others, both young and old, thin and obese. Sleep apnea treatment  is needed when someone stops breathing in their sleep, sometimes for more than a minute, and sometimes morethan a hundred times during a sleep cycle. While this is frightening it is important to remember that sleep apnea can be broken into three categories, obstructive, central, and mixed sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea is caused when the airway becomes obstructed by itself or another internal pressure. The symptoms of this type of apnea most commonly only lasts for about half a minute. It can be caused by a deviated septum, a swollen turbinate, or by the uvula, pallete, or back of the tounge falling into your throat. Some succesful non-surgical obstructive sleep apnea treatments are medication, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), dental appliances, and behavioral changes. Surgical obstructive sleep apnea treatment is available, and varies from canidate to canidate, and should only be attempted by a licensed doctor, who will discuss the methods available to you.

Central sleep apnea is caused when the brain fails to tell the lungs to breathe. The actual muscles never receive the order to breathe, so they merely remain at rest. It is often caused in infants and adults who are suffering from heart disease or cerebrovascular disease, with few cases being caused by high altitudes and medication. Central sleep apnea treatments have no clear guidelines at the moment, and different medications work for different people. Due to the seriousness of this type of sleep apnea treatment can vary greatly.

Mixed sleep apnea is whhen an individual suffers from both obstructive and central sleep apnea. When the two types of sleep apnea display sympoms togeather, then an individual can risk suffering from brain damage and death. Mixed sleep apnea treatment is still in early stages and includes medication, sometimes in combination with surgery. If you are suffering from mixed sleep apnea, it is imperative that you seek out professional treatment or at least consultation as it can become complicated swiftly.

With Sleep apnea affecting more than twelve million americans, sleep apnea treatment is gaining more and more research. Many cases of sleep apnea continue to this day, unknown to the individual. But with our leaping advances in medical technology, we are learning the vital treatments necessary in fighting this frightening disease.
